Salt & Sage Trading Co. Salty Hen Feed Company in Dalhart, TX, operates as a cozy cafe right next to the main shop on E 1st Street. It feels like a comfortable stop tailored for travelers passing through and locals looking for a relaxed midday break. With a casual, welcoming atmosphere, it’s the kind of place where the owners are genuinely invested in greeting guests and sharing their passion for good food, making it less about rushing and more about savoring simple, well-prepared fare.

The menu leans into approachable, hearty options with a homemade touch—items like the Charcuterie Box and a rotating Special of the Day coupled with dessert show the effort toward a balanced, satisfying meal. Salads like the layered “7 Layer (Plus Some)” provide a fresh, light alternative amid more indulgent choices. The highlight treats, including the Biscuit Rose De Reims and rich chocolate brownies, are clearly crafted to complement local tastes and seasonal cravings.

This spot works well for those seeking a quiet lunch or afternoon pick-me-up with a glimpse of local hospitality. Between the flavorful chicken salad sandwich and the broccoli salad that visitors keep coming back to, there’s a focus on freshness and generous portions without the fuss. Desserts, particularly pies and cheesecakes, seem to be a local favorite and a reason to stick around or return.

Visiting during a quiet moment of the day—like just after the lunch rush—offers space to enjoy the environment, which strikes a balance between homey comfort and a bit of small-town charm. It’s also a practical stop for anyone traveling through Dalhart who wants to break up a long drive with quality, satisfying eats and a friendly face.

We stopped off on our way back home from Colorado and had a wonderful treat. The food was excellent and the hospitality was great!! Would definitely go back!! Try the dessert!! The owner is working on a cookbook. I hope I can get one when it comes out. Very friendly and loves travelers. We love small, mom and pop, locally owned places - this was a great choice.

We were passing through and “googled up” a highly rated lunch spot. And this was the perfect choice!! The food was excellent and the owners couldn’t have been nicer! We will be back! Thank you!

What a small town Gem . Everyone needs to stop in and give this place a try! The food was fresh and amazing. It’s hard to describe how wonderful. Went back in for desserts for the family (pecan pie, chocolate pie, and 3 different types of cheesecake) definitely amazing. We will be back!

Great Food at a Great Price! Stopped by this place on a whim and was seriously impressed. The burgers were juicy, flavorful, and cooked just right, and the chicken salad sandwich was fresh and perfectly seasoned. The broccoli salad was delicious and the lemonade was super refreshing! Portions were generous, and the prices were more than reasonable for the quality. Definitely a spot I’ll be coming back to!

Wonderful from scratch cooking & freshly made desserts! Not for picky eaters, limited selection. Open for lunch Wed-Sat. It is worth a stop if you are in Dalhart at lunchtime. $37 for 3 meals with beverages and 1 dessert.

This is the cutest little place to eat! We had a wonderful Chicken Salad Croissant, Sweet Broccoli Salad, and the BEST sweet tea brewed on the stove. We will definitely be stopping again when traveling through Texas to New Mexico!
